Soldier's Song Inspiration

Christine Cummings
"The lyrics for the Soldier's Song came to me from the intensely emotional reaction I had when passing through a small town in New Hampshire, where from one day to the next, virtually every house, lawn, and overpass had been decorated with American flags and signs celebrating the homecoming of a young marine who had been stationed in Iraq.

The soldier was interviewed in the hometown paper and said that he was overwhelmed by the response from his hometown. While I don't think it was in any way exaggerated, it was in fact a stunning visual display of one town's 'collective sigh of relief' that one of their own had returned home safe and unharmed."

Mark Florio
"The normal songwriting process can vary from song to song, but for Soldier's Song it seemed to flow and develop within a very short time frame. The structure seemed to work instantly and felt perfectly matched after just a few sessions.

For me the subject matter is difficult. There are so many opinions about the war. I have such tremendous hopes for the world and sometimes feel that I'm just one small person in a world that is deafened to hear me. For Christine and me this song is a very small way of saying 'thank you' to all the men and women who protect our freedom every day. Although the Iraq War brings the gamut of emotions, good or bad, supporting one another should be the easy part.

Like so many other times in our nation's history, we will get through this crisis too if we can only find it in our hearts to be kind and work toward a lasting peace. We need to work together to create a place where there is more peace and less gun fire. There are so many important issues waiting to be addressed, homelessness, hunger, education, a clean environment, global warming, AIDS, disease, and poverty to name just a few. These are where we need to be directing our energies, our time and our resources.

I hope Soldier's Song will be one of many musical contributions written to provide both financial and emotional support for all those who sacrifice so much so that we can remain free. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Soldier's Song single will be donated to nonprofit organizations that support military families, widows/ers and orphans of our fallen heroes. While music cannot possibly cure all of the woes in our world, it is a start and one small way that we can come together and for just a few minutes, live in harmony together."
